A COMMITMENT TO SERVE: A COOPERATIVE BOARD MEMBER’S GUIDE TO G&T RESOURCE PLANNING by Summit Blue
In order to meet the estimated need for electricity, resource planners at electric utilities typically consider the range of potential resources available. These include conventional resources, such as coal and natural gas, as well as renewable energy resources and demand-side resources, such as energy efficiency and demand response.
The process of assessing these resources and determining which one best matches the needs of a utility’s customer base is an esoteric and involved process. In order to explain this process we have attached a report from Summit Blue. The purpose of the report is to describe how integrated resource planning at the level of a generation and transmission cooperative (G&T) can hedge the risks inherent in providing adequate electric resources to the G&T’s customers.
The premise of the report is that it is the responsibility of the boards of directors and managers of the systems served by a G&T to protect their member-owners against these risks. As a result, the report is written for these boards of directors and managers as well as their customer-members
By understanding the fundamental assumptions that drive the need for new resources, we believe cooperative board members can better represent their members’ interests.
