Renewable Energy Resources
Renewables present an opportunity for members of co-ops to "Go green"-- not just with clean alternatives to old-style power plants, but to save money. Where there is sufficient transmission capacity, wind power can undercut coal and natural gas because they have no fuel cost. Renewables provide a hedge against volatile commodity prices and protect members' pocketbooks. On-site renewables, like putting solar on your home, is also a good investment for both the coop and the homeowner. Solar prices have recently dropped to below the cost of nuclear power, and the ability to produce energy at peak times makes it even far more attractive. Co-ops ought to offer members smart programs to install renewable power and pay member-owners fair market value for the energy they produce.
